Summary

Stripe's agreement to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion (reported above $8B cash-and-stock) is a landmark convergence of payments and AI. OpenRouter — "Stripe for AI" — is a single access point to 400+ AI models that meters and prices inference usage, routes by cost/speed/availability, and takes a cut of spend. By acquiring it, Stripe gains a direct role in how developers evaluate, select, and move between models — on top of already processing payments for frontier AI labs. Combined with Stripe's co-authored Agentic Commerce Protocol and its prior stablecoin (Bridge) and wallet (Privy) acquisitions, the deal positions Stripe as the financial and model-routing plumbing of the agent economy.
